Bhagat Singh, the legendary Indian freedom movement martyr, has influenced many and ushered in a new chapter in India’s struggle for independence. Accounts of Bhagat Singh’s heroics are legendary. Born in September 1907, Bhagat Singh defied an empire and the weighty charges brought against him, namely, that he had "been engaged in conspiracy to wage war against his Majesty, the King Emperor, and to deprive him of the Sovereignty of British India."
Many of us do recognize Bhagat Singh as an icon of India’s freedom struggle and national movement, but, perhaps, many do appreciate little about what he did and juxtapose his contributions in the current political scenario. D. Raghunandan caught up with Prof. Chaman Lal, who has authored many books and articles on Bhagat Singh to bring out the relevance of Bhagat Singh legacy in today’s scenario. According to Prof. Lal, the best form of icon for India at present is in the form of youth and that is Bhagat Singh. Excerpts from the interview.
